What is a single supplement on a coach holiday?
A coach holiday price is worked out per person sharing a twin or double room. If you are travelling on your own and want that room to yourself, the hotel still charges for the room, and the difference is the single supplement. On White Bus holidays it is a flat amount, not a doubling of the price: £25 for the stay on the York holiday, £12 on the Blackpool Christmas break, £15 on the Arrochar night. It is never taken by the website. The office tells you the figure on the phone before you pay anything.
Why it exists
The hotel prices a room, not a bed. Two people sharing split that room between them, and one person in the same room does not, so the hotel charges the difference. It is the hotel's cost, passed on as it is.
It is worth saying that on these holidays the supplement is a set figure rather than a second fare. On the York Christmas holiday it is £25 for the whole stay, on the Blackpool Christmas break £12, and on the Arrochar night £15.
Other room supplements
A room can carry a supplement for what it looks out on as well as who is in it. The Blackpool Christmas break has a sea view supplement of £15 per person per night, and that is a choice rather than something you pay for being on your own.
Not every holiday lists a supplement. Where one is not shown, the office confirms what the hotel is charging when they call you, before you pay the balance.
How it is charged
It is not on the website. The deposit is the only thing the site takes, and no supplement is added to it. When the office rings to sort your room they tell you the figure, and it goes on the balance you settle with them.
So if you are booking for yourself, book the seat, and raise it on the call. Nothing is charged before somebody has said the number out loud to you.
